Inevitably, after a few weeks of these bad habits, we begin to feel sluggish.

There are no set rules to the Yumbox Detox Lunch Challenge. Let’s learn from each other. To help us get started, we came up with some Tips for shopping and meal planning. Get ready to reboot your body and kick off the New Year feeling great!
Tip 1: Fresh is Best
Processed and packaged foods tend to have too much salt and ingredients that aren’t always the healthiest options. So choose carefully when buying packaged foods. A little planning once a week or even once a month can ensure that you have healthy foods handy that make great snacks, like fresh fruit, berries, nuts and veggies. You can make more filling foods like garlic roasted potatoes (they’re great at room temperature as well) that you can add to your lunch a few times in a given week.
Tip 2: Increase Protein & Super Foods
Foods that are high in protein will keep you feeling fuller for longer and fuel your body and mind. Many of them overlap with foods that are referred to as Super Foods with antioxidants, phytochemicals, iron and other important nutrients.
Lunch ideas: cottage cheese, greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter, cheese, edamame, roasted chickpeas, whole grain protein bars, turkey roll ups, hummus, almonds, fish (like salmon or tuna), grapes, blueberries, red berries, nuts, dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, whole grains (like brown rice) and beans.
Tip 3: Meal Planning & Prep Ahead
If your fridge is stuffed with ready to eat Processed Foods, you will eat those. Let’s start with cleaning out the fridge. Here are some good foods to have handy to create a healthy lunches in minutes: hummus, hard boiled eggs (boil a few for the week), grilled chicken breast, and my favorite, a huge container of a bean and corn salad that lasts for days and goes well with everything. Other staples: chopped veggies (like carrots, red pepper and cucumbers), jars of olives and nuts that compliment a healthy lunch and make good snacks.
Tip 4: Reduce Portion Sizes
Smaller regular meals and snacks are your friend. Big meals can make us feel too full and slow us down. Steady meal timing helps regulate your digestive system, blood sugar, insulin levels, and appetite. It’s often recommended to use smaller plates, or in the case of lunch, smaller compartments/containers to help regulate the quantity of food you are eating.
TIP 5: Good for you Fiber Foods
Remember that fiber slows the rate at which sugar is absorbed in our systems and keeps us feeling fuller longer. Staying regular will help us feel slimmer and less bloated. For an extra dose of high fiber incorporate dried fruit likes dates, figs, apricots, raisins, cranberries and prunes in your lunch box.
